The SHIM Institute promotes the connection of mind, body and spirit for the purpose of creating a supportive healing environment, tailored to the individual needs of the patient, thus reinforcing the patient’s resiliency and vitality for life. | Our Approach: -
We define SPIRITUALITY as the dimension of a person that seeks to find internal meaning and purpose in their life through their relationships with themselves, with others and with a higher power. -
We educate health care professionals about the critical role spirituality plays in achieving a caring relationship between doctor and patient, with emphasis on sensitivity to the patient's culture, history, religion or spiritual tradition. -
We bring awareness to the healing team, such as family, friends and health care providers the need to address the spiritual dimensions of the patient, thus offering a compassionate presence assisting them in healing. -
We empower the patient by encouraging them to express their spiritual needs to their health care providers. -
We incorporate the SHIM 7 Principles of Healing – Faith, Hope, Social Connectedness, Purpose, Control, Forgiveness, and Gratitude into our educational programs. Why We are Needed: -
Patients desire and deserve a health care system where all of their needs are met – spiritual, emotional, intellectual, as well as physical needs. -
Health care professionals can significantly improve a patient's resilience and healing by understanding the vital role that the patient's spirituality contributes to their overall health and well being.
