STRESS REDUCTION - As it relates to our health:

  • “Stress Resilience Program” presented by N. Lee Smith, M.D. and Cathy Seegers, APRN Nurse Practitioner.
  • Offered to Cancer and Chronically Ill Patients.
  • SHIM is actively involved in establishing a Music Therapy Library for stress reduction and cancer care.
  • Dr. N. Lee Smith has created “Relaxation Solutions” a relaxation/meditation CD.

CANCER REHABILITATION:

  • The SHIM Institute partners with the staff of Cancer Rehabilitation Centers in providing uninsured and underinsured patients with scholarships to provide them the advantage of the individualized and integrated cancer rehabilitation care for improvement of their Quality of Life.
  • SHIM has worked extensively with Cancer Rehabilitation Centers to build a working relationship where we can educate and assist in promoting compassionate care for their patients.
  • SHIM was financially and physically responsible for the establishment of the Healing Room at a Cancer Rehabilitation Center. This room is provided for patients and their families for stress reduction and meditation.

THE S.P.R.K. MENTORING PROGRAM ~ Strategic Personal Resiliency for Kids:

  • This is a nationally recognized mentoring program developed for “At Risk Youth” by Albert Zylstra, Ph.D. He created this program to help children and young adolescents develop resiliency.
  • The mission of the S.P.R.K. Program is to engage children and young adolescents in awakening inherent inner strengths that are designed to instill personal power, stimulate resiliency, enhance spiritual strengths, and instill hope and purpose.
  • Dr. Zylstra works with an adult in the child’s life, teaching them to mentor and assist in the application of the program.

SHIM EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:

    Educational Conferences:

  • The purpose of these conferences is to promote the mission of the SHIM Institute. We strive to revitalize the connection between spirituality and health, by educating healthcare professionals, clergy, patients and others concerned with healthcare.
  • 2002 Conference: “Spirituality and Healing in Medicine: Practical Usage in Contemporary Healthcare” sponsored by Harvard Medical School.
  • 2003 Conference: “Spirituality and Healing in Medicine: It Takes a Community to Heal an Illness” sponsored by St. Mark's Hospital and James L. SorensonFoundation.
  • 2006 Conference: “The Role of Spirituality (Resiliency) in the Modern Comprehensive Care of Cancer Patients” at the Little America Hotel.
  • 2008 Conference: “Renewing the Emotional and Spiritual Joy in Professional Caregiving” at the U of U ~ Co-sponsored with Hospice for Utah Foundation and U of U College of Social Work.
  • 2009 Upcoming Conference: “Renewing the Spirit in Professional Caregiving: Creating a Culture of Compassion.” April 10th at the Salt Lake City Library - Keynote Speaker: Dr. Christina Puchalski


  • Monthly Educational Meeting:

  • The purpose of the monthly meeting is to join with others who are interested in the connection between spirituality and health. Speakers share their ideas and experiences which strengthens and revitalizes all of us.
  • Free and Open to the Public - First Thursday of the Month, September through May at 7:00 PM - St. Mark's Women's Pavillion - 3900 S. 1250 E. SLC, UT - 2nd Floor Classroom B
